Leading with Rhythm, Not Balance Series

Devotional 2 of 7

man speaking at conference

Matthew 9:9-13

When Jesus calls Matthew, criticism immediately follows. Religious leaders question His leadership choices - not quietly, but publicly.

This mirrors leadership at every level:

  • Strategic decisions challenged by stakeholders

  • Cultural shifts questioned by tradition

  • People-focused leadership criticized for inefficiency

Jesus responds once, clearly, and continues moving. He does not become defensive or distracted. He does not chase approval.

This is rhythmic leadership: responding from clarity, not insecurity.

Executives and pastors alike feel pressure to explain, justify, and defend continuously. Jesus shows a different way - anchored leadership that speaks when necessary and remains silent when explanation would distract from mission.

Reflection

  1. Whose opinions currently carry the most weight in my decision-making?

  2. How can I remain anchored to purpose when questioned?
