Leading with Rhythm, Not Balance Series

Devotional 1 of 7

Matthew 9:1-8

Jesus enters Matthew 9 already surrounded by need. A paralyzed man is brought before Him immediately - no preparation, no buffer, no transition. Leadership often begins this way: responsibility arrives before conditions feel ideal. Senior leaders recognize this moment.

• A new role comes with inherited problems

• A promotion elevates capacity before confidence catches up

• A calling unfolds faster than clarity

Jesus does not respond with haste or visible strain. He neither delays nor deflects. He speaks with calm authority and addresses both the surface issue and the deeper need beneath it.

This reveals a critical leadership truth:

Rhythm allows leaders to absorb demand without being overwhelmed by it.

Balance asks, “How do I manage everything at once?”

Rhythm asks, “How do I meet this moment faithfully?”

Jesus handles what is in front of Him - fully - then moves forward. He does not attempt to solve tomorrow’s problems in today’s moment.

Reflection

  1. Where am I feeling the greatest leadership pressure right now?

  2. What would it look like to meet that pressure with steadiness instead of urgency?
